13 items under price control scheme for Gawai

KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) has listed 13 items under the Festive Season Price Control Scheme in conjunction with the coming Kaamatan and Gawai festivals in Sabah and Sarawak.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said that for Gawai Dayak, the scheme would be implemented from 27 May to 2 June 2017.

“The implementation period is seven days; five days before the festive day, the festive day itself and a day after the festival.

“This scheme is implemented under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” Hamzah told the media in a press conference yesterday.

According to Hamzah, the maximum price is done at the production level (for chicken, eggs and pig) for wholesale and retail.

Among the items under price control are live chicken, standard chicken (slaughtered with feet, head, liver, gizzard or any parts), super chicken (slaughtered without feet, head, liver and gizzard), mature live chicken, chicken wings, eggs (Grade A, B, C), imported round cabbage (from Indonesia and China, excluding Beijing cabbage), shallots (india), garlic (China), pork belly, pork meat and lard and live pigs.

The ceiling prices are set to ensure that effective price control and that the affordable prices will benefit both the retailers and the consumers.

Hamzah said retailers and traders must sell controlled price items within their ceiling prices set by the government.

They are also to display pink price tags for controlled to differentiate them with the other items not under price control scheme.

The Minister pointed out that action would be taken against those who failed to adhere to the regulation and individual traders could be fined up to RM100,000, jailed not more than three years while companies could  be fined RM250,000  for selling controlled items above their ceiling prices.

For individuals who failed to display pink price tags for controlled items, they can be fined up to RM10, 000 while companies can face a fine of RM20,000.

Also present at the press conference were Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur and Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) Development Datuk Haji Mohd Naroden Majais and state director of MDTCC Dato’ Stanley Tan.
