BINTULU: One hundred and ninety two doors from six longhouses in the Kakus constituency will get immediate assistance under the Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Project (PPRMS) this year.

Kakus State assemblyman cum Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai disclosed that these longhouses would receive assistance in the form of construction materials worth RM2,500 for each door.

“These 192 households will be the recipients for the first stage of the programme,” he said.

These six longhouses are Rumah Norma Sanggat, Jalan Samarakan; Rumah Arjey Kenai, Nanga Mina; Rumah Gerry Jani, Ulu Mejau, Tatau; Rumah Robert Ahsoon, Nanga Empang; Rumah Was Janting, Sungai Entajum and Rumah Degum Usit, Sungai Puti, Kakus.

“The financial assistance from the state government funded programme —PPRMS — is to help repair and rebuild dilapidated  longhouses so that that the people can live in a safe and comfortable  environment,” explained Sikie  yesterday (Wednesday) after attending a meeting on the implementation of the programme at the Tatau District Office.

The PPRMS is being carried out on a ‘gotong-royong’ basis and involves the longhouse folk.

Sikie also reminded the longhouses that the renovations or repairs must be done as soon as they receive the construction materials.

Also present at the meeting was acting Tatau district officer Calvin Ligong.
