KUCHING: About 200 participants from various education institutions including schools, district offices, universities and non-profits from all over Malaysia attended a webinar entitled ‘Assessing Student Outcomes in the New Normal’, organised by research company Owl and Badger Research recently.

The webinar is also done in collaboration with Pemimpin GSL Malaysia and Edvolution Enterprise, and is part of Owl & Badger Research’s efforts to create engaging public discourse especially during these uncertain times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Owl and Badger Research in a statement said the panel for the webinar included Muhammad Nazmi Rosli or better known as Cikgu Nazmi, an English teacher from SK Long Sukang, Lawas.

Cikgu Nazmi is famous for his creative teaching methods and has recently gone viral on social media for delivering homework to rural students in the area of Lawas.

Besides Cikgu Nazmi, the panel also featured Cheryl Fernando, the country director of Pemimpin GSL Malaysia, a non-profit that runs a professional development programme for school leaders — and Melissa Tanya Gomez, the co-founder of Edvolution Enterprise which works closely with district education officers.

The event was moderated by managing partner of Owl & Badger Research, Deborah Dris.

The three panellists addressed issues on assessment of student outcomes and practical ways to assess students especially during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Many participants have expressed their concerns about school re-opening and how teachers should prepare for it.

The panel also discussed topics surrounding digital learning and the digital divide in areas with little to no internet access. This brought up the discussion of who should be responsible for student assessment during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) — the teacher or the parents?

“We have organised two webinars previously from the end of last month. We hope to organise more webinars in the near future,” Dris said.

The recording of the webinar can be viewed on www.obresearch.co/webinar along with the previous webinars organised by Owl & Badger Research.
