BELAWAI: A total of 284 anglers partook  in a fishing competition organised by Shimano Club held at the Belawai Beach here on Sunday.

The programme was launched by the Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datu Len Talif Salleh. Its organising chairman Wong Tai Yong said that they continued holding the yearly programme because of the good response from the public.

“The response was very good. We not only received participants from Belawai but also Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sarikei and Sibu. At this competition, we offered RM1,000 cash prize for the champion, RM600 for second place whereas third place winner received RM300 as well as Shimano brand fishing gear and trophies.

“This year is the sixth time the event is  held,” he said.

Meanwhile, Len, who is also Kuala Rajang State Assemblyman, said the government had plans to develop the Belawai tourism sector.

“Belawai Beach is indeed an attraction; we can see how many visitors coming here every Sunday and during school holidays. I am very confident that the uniqueness of it is the main attraction to visitors.

In this regard, he hoped that local communities would take the opportunity to venture into the tourism sector such as creating home stay centres and so on.

“The presence of many visitors to Belawai will certainly open up more small industries and increase the socio-economic status of the local residents.

“I hope the locals could take advantage of this opportunity as well,” he said.

Earlier, Len also presented disaster relief cheque amounted RM10,000 to the Tanjung Manis District Officer, Udin Bujang.
