KUCHING: A total of 37 express buses were inspected by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in an operation at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal here, yesterday.

State RTD director Mohd Shafiq Anas Abdullah said the operation was aimed at ensuring that the express buses were safe to use, especially during the Chinese New Year festive season.

“Of the 37 buses inspected, only one tyre failure was identified, while brake, light and technical tests were okay,” he said.

He said express bus inspections were also conducted at all terminals throughout the state.

The technical inspections were made thoroughly like brakes, lamps and tires.

Mohd Shafiq said for each express buses checked, the JPJ will issue a Bus Inspection slip which has valid periods according to the results of the inspection conducted based on tyre standards.

He explained that if the tread of a tyre depth is over 8mm deep, the validity period is 14 days.

Meanwhile, Mohd Shafiq said a total of 291 vehicles were inspected during the statewide operation.

He said two cases were compounded and nine cases were issued notices. However, no vehicle was seized.
