37 nabbed in 13 gambling raids

KUCHING: Police personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police contingent continued with their aggressive raids against illegal gambling last week.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dato Dev Kumar Sree Shumungam said for the past week, from 1 to 7 May, the state police conducted 13 successful raids against illegal gambling that resulted in the arrests of 37 individuals.

Seven of the raids were against illegal 4D, cyber gambling (5) and cock-fighting (1).

The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQ and district CID units. There were three raids conducted by CID Headquarters, namely in Miri and Sarikei. Other than that CID Kuching conducted two raids, CID Miri two raids; two raids by CID Bintulu; one raid each by CID Bau, CID Serian, CID Limbang, and CID Marudi.

The seven raids on illegal 4D sellers resulted in the arrests of seven individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM1,259. Mobile phones, portable printers, betting slips, calculators and stationeries were also seized.

Five raids on cyber gambling were conducted in Miri, Bintulu and Limbang resulted in the arrest of 19 persons and the seizure of 61 computers and cash amounting to RM4,675.

Apart from illegal 4D and cyber gambling, a raid was conducted at a cock-fighting pit in an estate at Beluru, Marudi and resulted in the arrests of 11 individuals and seizure of various gambling paraphernalia.

Of the 37 arrested, 34 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 15 and 70 years old. All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953 and Prevention to Cruelty of Animals Ordinance, 1962.

Dev Kumar said the operation against illegal gambling in the state would be ongoing.
