MUKAH: Some 530 giant tiger prawns (penaeus monodon) were released into the Mukah River on Wednesday.

The release was conducted by State Fisheries Department director Bohari Leng during an engagement programme with the fishermen community in the district.

The symbolic release was done to reflect the government’s concern in preserving the prawn species to guarantee sustainability of marine life in the river and to increase the fishermen’s source of income and socio-economy of the locals.

Also present at the event were Malaysia Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Region Two Mukah officer Mastam Nodo and DOF Region Two Sibu representative, Ardi Beddu.
