KUCHING: A total of 86 prison officers received the certificate of excellence service awards held at the State Prison Office here, yesterday.

The awards were in recognition for their dedication and commitment in discharging their duties.

At the event, twenty-nine individuals, comprising police officers and community leaders were also appointed as members of the Visitor Judge Board (Lembaga Hakim Pelawat).

Deputy Home Minister, Dato’ Masir Kujat and State Prison General Deputy Commissioner (Safety and Correctional), Dato’ Alzafry Mohamed Alnassif presented the certificates and appointment letters to the recipients.

Speaking at the event, Masir said about 27,000 convicts had completed their rehabilitation programme outside prisons in the state.

“The number of repeated cases involving convicts who had undergone the rehabilitation programme is below one per cent. This means out of 974 convicts, only 14 of them are repeaters,” he said, adding that the statistics showed the current number of prison inmates in Sarawak is 50 per cent below the capacity of prisons throughout the state.
