KUCHING: The Sarawak government will announce new development on hydrogen economy this month.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, in revealing this, said the state wanted to promote green energy so that it is eligible to claim carbon credits.

“Everybody is talking about hydrogen economy now. And Sarawak is now far ahead than the rest of the states in Malaysia on hydrogen.

“In less than a year, we already have a prototype plant that produces hydrogen,” he said at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) annual delegates’ conference and special convention closing ceremony at its headquarters here on Sunday.

Abang Johari said the state has plenty of water resources to produce hydrogen, and because of that there was already a party showing interest to invest on hydrogen in Sarawak.

“… and we have requested the federal government to reduce the import tax for hydrogen…,” he said.

He added to reduce the tax on hydrogen powered car would be something new and Sarawak was heading in that direction, which is to promote green energy.

“So, that is our economy towards 2030, it is through education, strengthening our economic resources and I am sure that by 2030, we will be a very developed state by then,” he stressed.

He said the state economic approach was based on digital and environmental sustainability.

“We are very lucky that we have enough sunlight and rain. You chopped (trees), sure it will grow again, hence our forestry policy now post Covid-19 is to replant our forest,” he said.

He said with modern technology, replanting of trees could be done easily by using drone technology.

On the development of oil and gas resources, Abang Johari said that between now and next month, a new policy on the state’s oil and gas would be made.

“It will definitely give us new input in the development of our economy,” said Abang Johari.
