KUCHING: Customs officials thwarted two attempts to smuggle in six imported air pistols at the Kuching Mail Centre.

State Customs director Herman Shah Abdullah said the first attempt by smugglers was on Dec 24 around 10am and the second on Dec 28 at 9.30am.

In the first attempt, Customs officers inspected packages and found two air pistols without an import permit issued by the Inspector General of Police, under the Weapons Act 1960 in accordance with Item 45, Third Schedule, Part I, Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2017.

“The second attempt was on Dec 28 around 10am where Customs officers found four air pistols  in the packages that were imported from abroad.

“The goods on both occasions were labelled as ‘RC Toy Spare Part’ in order to confuse Customs officers at the Mail Centre and they are shipped by exporters in Taiwan,” Herman said.

Herman said offenders upon conviction are liable to a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM50,000, whichever is greater, and not more than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, whichever is greater, or imprisonment of not more than five years, or both.
