BETONG: Rules and regulations displayed on ferries should be strictly enforced by the operators and complied with by the public without fail.

Spaoh Islamic Charity Trust Board (Lakis) chairman Dr Abang Ismail Abang Julhi said among the things that can be focused on at the moment is to review the level of enforcement of ferry service regulations.

“The rules posted on the ferry walls are not adhered to by most passengers. In fact, the ferry operators are also not enforcing them. Therefore, they need to be revised, including the disembarking or boarding of passengers,” he said on Sunday (Jan 3).

He explained that another thing that should be given attention to is improvement of the ramp to make them safer to use.

“New drivers or those who have never used a ferry before may be scared if a ferry does not dock properly.

“Even experienced ferry users still feel a little nervous when getting on or off a ferry.

“In addition, left and right barriers need to be installed to prevent vehicles from slipping,” he said.

Abang Ismail also expressed frustration over the use of safety jackets.

“I notice they were never used, but only arranged in a special place. In my opinion, it is quite dangerous because when an accident occurs, we will be reluctant to use them.

“I think all these need to be given attention as several ferries are still used in Sarawak,” he explained.

He then wondered if the state government could negotiate with Penang government to purchase, lease or borrow their unused ferries as they are suitable for large rivers such as Batang Lupar.
