MIRI: A total eight people including a five-month-old baby girl and an elderly couple in their 80s from three families were made homeless by a fire that destroyed their double-storey wooden house in Lorong 1C Pujut Tanjong Batu at noon yesterday (April 26).

Lopeng Fire station chief, Mohamad Hamdani Madon, said that the house was 80 percent destroyed in the 1.45pm incident.

Eight firemen from Miri central fire station were also deployed to the fire scene.

Fortunately, there were no casualties as all the occupants of the house ran to safety when the fire broke out.

However, one of the women suffered slight burns to a foot while trying to escape. She was immediately taken to Miri Hospital.

Mohd Saharan, 52, the elderly couple’s son-in-law rushed back from his workplace in Krokop when his wife informed him about the fire.

“Thank god, everyone is safe. They managed to run out of the house in the nick of time,” he told New Sarawak Tribune at the scene.
