KUCHING: Muhammad Luqman Daniel of the Sarawak Cycling Team won bronze and Sarawak’s first track medal in 2022 in the 4km individual pursuit final at the JCM Track Series 1-2022 held in Johor’s newly completed Johor Velodrome on Wednesday (Feb 9).

The Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA), in a statement on Thursday (Feb 10), stated that Muhammad Luqman finished third with a time of 4:44.499 at an average speed of 50.615 km/h behind the more experienced racers and competition favourites.

The winner was Abdul Azim Aliyas of Majlis Sukan Negara with 4:32:826 at 52.781 km/h while first runner up was Waldron Chee Wan Chun of Sabah with 4:40:721 at 51.296 km/h.

“The Sarawak Cycling Team for this event consists of head coach Josiah Ong, team manager Irawan Sudarsono and two riders namely Muhammad Luqman Daniel and Harrith Affan who were due to race in the Men’s U23 4km Individual Pursuit, the Men’s U23 Omnium, and the Men’s U23 Kilometre events.

“Unfortunately, due to an outbreak in COVID-19 cases among teams competing on Thursday (Feb 10), the organisers have decided to cancel the rest of the events for the JCM Track Series 1 – 2022,” it explained.

SCA expressed confidence that continuous programmes under the Sarawak Cycling Team will show results in the athletes’ improvement in performance and competition.

“We would like to wish the team well and invite more private initiatives to contribute to the future success of the Sarawak Cycling Team,” it added.

On another note, the Sarawak Cycling Team thanked the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and SCA for the continuous support as well as its sponsors Team Purpose, Hutan Ration, The Fresh Company and Kuching Cycle Hub among others.
