BELADIN: The fishermen here are still hoping for the reopening of the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority’s (LKIM) Fish Landing Complex, which has been vacant for ages.
Even though they appear to have forgotten about the project due to it not being usable for an extended period, if operational, it will make life easier for the fishermen.
Suara Sarawak was able to get a response from some fishermen, who stated that they wanted it to continue to operate with the addition of equipment.
Beladin Fishermen Association (PNK) board of directors member Hussaini Anong hoped that the complex, which was built at a cost of millions of ringgit, could be used soon.
“The complex is important as it makes it convenient and safe for fishermen to land their catch,” he stressed on Wednesday (June 15).
Hazali Atang also expressed the same view and said the fishermen were still hopeful.
“Many would shake their heads when the LKIM Fish Landing Complex is mentioned…it has been under construction for quite some time but is still not operational. How long should we wait?”
“We are not angry that the project has stalled for years but rather, we are looking forward to the benefits that have been promised to us fishermen.
“Therefore, we expect our demands to be heard this time,” he stressed. “It’ll be cun (Sarawakian slang for much better) if it comes with an ice manufacturing plant.”
Meanwhile, Suman Alem expressed his dissatisfaction, saying: “When it wasn’t completed, we were disappointed…not abandoned for a year or two.”
“What we hope is that LKIM can complete it immediately so that it can be used,” he added.
Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor also weighed in, expressing hope that PNK would not remain silent on the issue.
“That is why I emphasise that PNK serves as a forum for fishermen to air their grievances.
“This issue has always been raised by me as the people’s representative, all the way up to the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN).
“I urge the completion of the LKIM Fish Landing Complex so that it can be used by all.
“Keep in mind that the government is investing a significant amount of money in this project. So, it’s a waste if it’s not used.”
Razaili had earlier handed out assistance in the form of equipment, including nets, to fishermen here.
