SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) councillors are urged to be more proactive in looking after the areas entrusted to them.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek said councillors should also work in groups to reach out to the people to solve various issues.

He pointed out that the areas under SRDC jurisdiction are big, speaking from his seven-year experience as a councillor at Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

“As we know, we have four representatives of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) which are Dudong, Bukit Assek, Pelawan and Nangka. And every year, we are allocated RM5mil for each assemblyman and constituency.

“This year, we have a total of RM20mil in Rural Transformation Project (RTP) funds and some are for the SRDC area,” he said during the SRDC councillors re-appointment ceremony here recently as per a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report.

A total of 32 SRDC members were re-elected effective from July 1, 2022 to Dec 31, 2022 (six-month term).
