Local Chinese leaders meet over CGM gala

KAPIT: Leaders of local Chinese communities have met to discuss preparations for holding a Chap Goh Mei (CGM) festival for Kapit District on 8 March at Dewan Sri Baleh here.

Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo presided at the Monday meeting at Foochow Association here.

The Chap Goh Mei celebration is initiated by the government with the theme “Sarawak celebrates.”   

Sarawak has four main celebrations namely Chinese New Year/Chap Goh Mei (Chinese), Gawai Dayak (Dayak), Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Muslims) and Christmas (Christians).

All the four festivities must be celebrated in the state’s 40 districts under supervision of respective district officers.

According to Tan,  300 guests comprising of civil servants, community leaders and members of the public from all the various ethnic groups will be invited to the function.

The guest-of-honour is Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

Among the Chinese community leaders who attended the Monday meeting were Pemanca Yong Thu fook, Penghulu Sia Shui Poh, Penghulu Wong KieIng, KapitanYiapYii Hoo, Kapitan Kong Cheak Hie, United Chinese Association chairman Liew Song Swee, Kapit Foochow Association chairman Sii Bang Ee, Tai San Ten Association chairman Kong Siau Kui and Chiang Chuan Association chairman Sng Geok Yien.
