KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan yesterday announced that it has decided to sit out of the Cameron Highlands parliamentary by-election.

Its secretary-general Mak Kah Keong said the decision was reached by the party’s top leadership as Cameron Highlands is not a traditional seat of the party though the party has members and a good track record there.

“The decision was made after multiple consultations and discussions with the grassroots in recent weeks especially Pahang Gerakan and the Cameron Highlands division.

“Gerakan has been collecting feedback from the local community and after careful and comprehensive consideration, it was agreed that our primary task now is to focus on our ongoing efforts to strengthen the party instead of engaging in a by-election,” he said in a statement here yesterday. – Bernama

In the 14th General Election (GE14) held on May 9 last year, Gerakan, which was then a component of the Barisan Nasional, failed to win a single seat. It pulled out of the coalition, which was defeated by the Pakatan Harapan opposition coalition in GE14, following the trouncing.
