MULU: It was reported that a fire was raging in Mulu National Park yesterday.
According to Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, the affected area was Batu Bungan Cliff trail adjacent to Gunung Api (which 1,750 metres high).
Located not far from the fire is Kampung Batu Bungan, a Penan village.
As at press time yesterday, the area was still burning.
“The fire could be seen burning the top of the hills,” said Law, adding that a request for a helicopter would be made immediately to water-bomb the blaze.
The nearest sources of water are Tutoh River and Melinau River.
Mulu is hemmed in by three mountains, namely, Gunung Mulu (2,376m), Gunung Benarat (1,858m) and Gunung Api (1,750m).
Mulu National Park is known for its extraordinary biodiversity, and at 55,000 hectares it is the largest national park in Sarawak.
It has been declared one of Unesco’s world heritage area in 2000.
