A year’s jail for threatening to burn down petrol station

KUCHING: A man was sentenced to 12 months’ jail by the Sessions Court for trying to get free fuel and threatening to burn down a petrol station with a lighter if his request was not met.

Syafiq Fadhullah Hussaini, 32, pleaded guilty to the charge read by an interpreter before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman today.

He had deliberately attempted to burn the petrol station at Batu 13, Jalan Kuching/Serian, at about 8.30 am on Sunday (July 30) because his request to fill his motorbike with petrol for free was denied.This was because he had no money to pay for his petrol fuel.

In addition, he also asked the complainant for cash, a pack of cigarettes and a phone top-up card but these requests were also not fulfilled.

He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code read together with Section 511 of the same act.

During the incident, Syafiq intended was said to have taken the fuel pump nozzle, ignited a lighter but did not point it towards the nozzle.

The complainant then shouted for help from other workers to get hold of Syafiq and called the police to arrest him.

The complainant later filed a police report for further action and investigation.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
