KUCHING: The Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) “strongly opposes” the extension of the Legal Profession Act 1976 (LPA 1976) to Sarawak.

Its president Ranbir Singh Sangha said this in response to the proposed Legal Profession Bill 2019 which came to the knowledge of state’s legal professions yesterday.

“I am consulting my committee on the next course of action but most certainly we strongly oppose the LPA extension
to Sarawak,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted, yesterday.

Asked if he would be writing to the Bar Council as suggested by Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen, Ranbir said he would not comment further.

News portal Dayak Daily yesterday said Chong had conveyed to de facto Law Minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong that Sarawak’s legal profession did not want the LPA extended to Sarawak.
