KUCHING: The Sarawak Transport Ministry has urged budget airline AirAsia to play a bigger role in promoting Sarawak within the BIMP-EAGA region and other international destinations.

Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said he had a discussion with AirAsia Berhad chief executive officer Riad Asmat last month on the matter.

“Therefore, I hope this will be another milestone for AirAsia in Sarawak,” he said at a press conference after welcoming AirAsia’s inaugural flight from Singapore to Miri at Miri Airport on Friday (April 29).

He added that AirAsia Berhad played an important role in the air transportation industry in the state. “AirAsia connects us with Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and to other major towns within the state.”

On the flights from Singapore to Sarawak, he said that he had also received requests from Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng and Pelawan assemblyman Michael Tiang to have flights from Singapore to Sibu.

“AirAsia is planning some more flights in the later part of this year, and we will look into this as well,” assured Lee.
