KUCHING: The youth are told to appreciate the sacrifices of past leaders in fighting for independence and ensuring development in both Sarawak and Malaysia.

Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said it is common for people to take things for granted particularly when they are accustomed to the way things are.

Alluding to the skills displayed by art students at Sekolah Seni Malaysia, Sarawak at Jalan Sultan Tengah here, he said it is considered as normal for those who are in the school and among their peers.

“But to me, it is impressive. This may seem usual to the people in the school, so the value appreciation is important. By doing so, you will motivate yourselves to work harder and do better than before.

“In the end, we can develop individuals who are more resilient and unfazed by challenges,” he said in his speech when officiating at Kamboh SarawakFM programme at the school today.

Fazzrudin, who is Chief Political Secretary to the Premier, said the value of appreciation should also extend to the teachers of the school and the past leadership who have worked hard to build the school.

“This school (Sekolah Seni Malaysia) was not built yet during my time, if it was, I would have studied here and so do others.

“We must appreciate the hard work done by our leaders to establish this school, we must appreciate our past leaders for their role in ensuring that our country reached independence.

“The same thing goes for those who were fighting (for independence) in Sarawak and their sacrifices. We must appreciate their efforts as well,” he said.

At the same time, the Tupong assemblyman also hoped that Sekolah Seni Malaysia, Sarawak would create leaders of the future.

“Please hold to these two values that is appreciation and not taking things for granted.

“If we can do that, I am confident that we will see a lot of leaders can be produced from this school who would then contribute to the development of Sarawak and the nation as a whole,” he said.
