KUCHING: Backbenchers Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii (GPS-Repok) and Ahmad Safiee (GPS-Daro) hailed the tabling of the Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, saying it is timely.

“The people of Sarawak are careful in choosing their representatives and which candidates to give support to as they will fight for the people’s rights, not for personal gain,” said Huang.

“So, we do not want elected representatives to change parties after being elected. The representatives of the people of Sarawak are of integrity and responsibility.

“With the amendment, it will ensure that assemblymen comply with the constitution or rules and party discipline,” he said during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Tuesday (Nov 22).

Ahmad, meanwhile, described it as a progressive and proactive step by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government in practicing and creating a stable government for the people of Bumi Kenyalang.

He added that the amendment is not only to appreciate and respect the people’s mandate through the democratic system but also to maintain political integrity in the state administration.

“This amendment is a clear message to all elected representatives who are mandated by the people to stick to the principles of the party they represent as well as protect the trust that the people have given to them during the election process.

“I am confident that with the enforcement of this Bill, it will also be able to stop any representative who likes to jump parties like frogs to fulfill their personal agenda without thinking about the effect on the people,” he said in support of the Bill.
