SERIAN: A new water treatment plant needs to be built in Balai Ringin to cope with a much higher demand for water supply.

Balai Ringin assemblyman, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said this was because the water treatment plan here could no longer cope with demand.

“At the moment, the treated water supply in Balai Ringin has only reached up to 36.5 per cent, which can only be supplied to the market.

“After Balai Ringin market, the treated water cannot be supplied to other areas, and almost 80 villages still have not received water supply,” he said, adding that only 32 villages have already received it.

He said this after attending the Balai Ringin Sub District Mini Lab at Roxy Hotel here on Wednesday (March 22).

“We need more than RM300 million to build a new water treatment plan, for distribution to the people in my constituency up to Kampung Spaoh in Simunjan,” he said.

According to Snowdan, the cost was made known to him by the director of the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department, Chang Kuet Shian.

“I have also informed Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he added.
