BINTULU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed for the role of the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to be expanded.

According to Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, he has discussed with the Premier on a proposal to establish an agency similar to the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA).

Dr Rundi said the Premier had suggested that the role of BDA should be further expanded as the agency has its own allocation.

“The Premier of Sarawak proposes to expand the functions of BDA because it has allocations to address basic needs such as roads, clean water supply and others,” he said.

Dr Rundi said this when presenting cheques under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) Phase One 2023 and MRP-Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Project (PPRMS) Phase Two 2022 for the Kemena constituency, recently.

He reminded longhouse chiefs that any rebuilding or upgrading of longhouses should have proper planning and sourcing of funds.

“The MRP allocation provided is only meant to assist in supplementing the existing funds and should be distributed responsibly to every resident or longhouse in need,” he said.

He also suggested that a meeting should be held to inform the longhouse residents of any government allocation.

At the event, a total of RM939,977 was distributed to 39 recipients, with 26 receiving the MRP Phase One 2023 allocation and 13 others receiving the MRP-PPRMS Phase Two 2022 allocation.
