SERIAN: Parents are told to be aware of courses offered by private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) to their children.

Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said some courses available in the IPTS were not recognised by the government.

“As soon as they completed their SPM or STPM examinations, a lot of private institutions will offer courses to them.

“However, some of these courses are not recognised by the government so their qualifications later will be of no use,” he said.

Riot, who is also the Serian MP, said in some cases, the students were stuck with no clear direction after they graduated.

“These unrecognised courses will put the students and parents at the losing end.

“So I appeal to parents to be wary before sending your children to pursue their studies to a higher level,” said Riot at an incentive presentation ceremony at Kampung Pichin on Saturday (Feb 12).

Apart from that, the Serian MP also urged parents to send their children to learn professional skills.

He said that Sarawak had three industrial training institutes (ILP) in Serian, Kota Samarahan and Miri that students could explore.

“Serian ILP, which is currently be developed at a cost of about RM300 million, will be operating by the end of next year.

“For those who did not excel in their examinations, do not lose hope.

“I suggest parents take the initiative to send their children to ILP for proper skills training,” said Riot.

Present at the ceremony was Serian district education officer Charlie Ungang.
