KUCHING: Members of the public are encouraged to volunteer and be a part of the state Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba Sarawak) community brigade and auxiliary firemen.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that it is crucial for members of the public to be equipped with the right knowledge and skills when it comes to safety.

He said this will enable them to act and respond to any form of emergency accordingly while waiting for the relevant officials, such as Bomba, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Civil Defence Force (APM), and the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), among others, to arrive.

“Agencies like Bomba, PDRM, APM, and RELA are looking after the people’s wellbeing and safety regardless of the circumstances. These unsung heroes need to be recognised and appreciated.

“As such, I would like to urge the public to join the Bomba community brigade and auxiliary firemen so they could assist and help their respective communities, especially those who lived in high-risk areas prone to flooding and landslides,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Petra Jaya Bomba Community Carnival 2023 at the Petra Jaya Fire Station here today (March 11).

With the uncertain weather conditions, Fadillah, who is also the Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, reminded the public to stay vigilant.

“Lately, the weather changes have been uncertain, from very hot and sunny to heavy downpour. This may cause high-risk areas to be affected by flooding and landslides.

“Therefore, it is crucial for communities in those areas to be prepared and know how to evacuate in an emergency,” he pointed out.
