BINTULU: Community leaders at the grassroots level need to equip themselves with knowledge and skills in tandem with current development needs.

This is because leaders are in a position of trust to bring about a fair and equitable society, in this instance, in ensuring the welfare of those under them, said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Samalaju Area Tuai Rumah Association, he emphasised that every community leader (tuai rumah) needs to have knowledge and skills to help them manage longhouses.

“Because we are the head of the village, we take care of the people, take care of the longhouse, take care of our own children, we can’t be without skills, we can’t be without knowledge,” he said.

Majang said programmes such as courses and seminars would therefore be useful to improve their knowledge,” he said.

At the event, Majang, who is also Samalaju assemblyman, also announced a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM20,000 to the association.
