SIBU: Criminals are going hi-tech not only to steal one’s money but also one’s heart.

Therefore, staying vigilant against evolving scam tactics is important to protect oneself from potential fraud, said Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

While acknowledging the manifold advantages technology bestows upon daily lives, the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government cautioned that scammers have adeptly harnessed these tools to carry out their illegal activities.

“It (technology) is meant to provide us with convenience but criminals have found ways to exploit it. They misuse technology.

“I believe that we’re going to face AI-driven crime very soon. They (scammers) use AI technology to cheat you through various online and social media platforms.

“We have to keep ourselves updated on all these new tactics and approaches by online scammers,” he said in his speech during the Townhall Discussion on Cybercrimes at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here this morning.

The Pelawan assemblyman also highlighted the need for heightened scam awareness, particularly among senior citizens.

“It’s essential to understand that scammers not only steal your money but also your heart.

“This is particularly concerning for our senior citizens, who may be isolated at home and not well-versed in technology. When they venture onto social media, they may inadvertently fall victim,” he said.

On the townhall discussion, Tiang commended the collaborative efforts of the Sarawak Contingent police headquarters (IPK), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Bank Negara in organising the programme and hoped for more similar programmes in the future.

“I am happy that the organisers extended invitations to the community leaders for this townhall discussion. I hope they will convey this valuable information back to the community and share insights to safeguard them against scams,” he said.

Also present were Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata and Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.
