KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) foiled an attempt to smuggle 50 illegal logs of various sizes and species at Sungai Sebenuang in Balleh, Kapit last Friday.

SFC in a statement on Wednesday said acting on a public tip-off, a team from its One-Stop Compliance Centre (OSCC) Balleh went to the site and seized the logs.

“During the inspection, the unmarked logs which were tied together into rafts were believed to have been illegally felled from a nearby forest. The logs were estimated to be of 110.3 cubic metres (m3) in volume,” the corporation said.

In another case in Sarikei, SFC said its OSCC had raided a location by the roadside near Kuala Rejang last Saturday and seized 309 mangrove poles.

It said the raid was carried out after receiving information on a suspected mangrove theft at the location.

“The mangrove poles were stacked in piles and none of the poles bear any official markings. They were subsequently seized upon confirming that no licence to extract timber has been issued in the area,” said SFC.

The corporation said police reports on both incidents were lodged and the cases were handed over to the relevant authority for further investigation and disposal.
