KAPIT: Minister of Youth, Sport, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, has pledged to fight for funds to upgrade Bletih Indoor Stadium and Kapit Swimming Pool.

According to Abdul Karim, during his inspection on Saturday morning, the indoor stadium is in poor condition and urgently needs upgrading and maintenance work.

“The indoor stadium was found to have many damages such as a leaking roof and so on. Next to the indoor hall, there is a swimming pool that is also in disrepair. So, if these two facilities under my ministry in Kapit are damaged, I cannot accept it.

“Therefore, after being informed in the last DUN (Sarawak Legislative Assembly) session by the representative of this area, I have made the decision to personally inspect the indoor stadium.

“After inspection, I feel it is necessary to repair because if the facilities are left in this condition, the ones who suffer losses are our youth and the people,” he said at a media conference after representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, to officiate at the state-level Youth Day at Dewan Suarah Kapit today.

Abdul Karim said that he would fight for the funds to turn the indoor stadium into an air-conditioned equipped stadium, which he estimated to be around RM8 million to RM10 million.

“We are blessed in Sarawak; our budget is quite substantial due to the very good state administration. I believe that what we request from the Premier and the cabinet for restoration will receive approval,” he said.
