Boot camp to empower student-led startups

KUCHING: Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) is collaborating with Curtin Malaysia through its IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch (IEEE CMSB) for the IEEE Innovation Nation Malaysia 2022 — Technopreneurship boot camp under its TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub Miri (Sarawak Track).

According to a press statement issued today, the programme is held within the period of Aug 1 to Dec 17 with the aim of providing a platform for startups and innovators to learn and equip themselves with advanced technical knowledge and business skills.

Ain Hamizan, IEEE R10 Student Activity Committee and advisor of Innovation Nation Malaysia 2022, chairman, said that the aim is to provide a platform to empower student-led startups and as one of the IEEE members and international representatives

“I hope that Sarawakian entrepreneurs and their products can reach out to more audiences internationally.

“I am proud to be a Sarawakian as this beautiful land is full of opportunities and provides great support for entrepreneurs through the TEGAS Digital Village in Kuching and TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub in Bintulu and Miri,” she said.

Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, who is also TEGAS chairman, added TEGAS and Curtin Malaysia had played a significant role in supporting this programme in Sarawak, which accelerated the growth of their student-led startups and social enterprises.

“The programme aligns with the Sarawak government’s agenda of creating 1000 startups and proof of concept projects, in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy,” he said.

Furthermore, the programme is aimed at inspiring more Sarawakian entrepreneurs to tackle local issues with technological solutions as well as to prepare them with adequate knowledge on the startup ecosystem.

“By the end of the programme, participants will be developing a prototype or minimum viable product (MVP) that will be addressing the United Nations Sustainable Goals Development (SDG), which are SDG number three namely Good Health and Well-Being and SDG number three which is Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure,” he added.

A total of 13 teams namely Sanic, Neural Works, Grand Tech Auto, Fast Harvest, ALR, Cubez, Team M101, FitMe, Unpredictable Trio, TechGenics, Biolign and Power will also be given the opportunity to enter the Malaysia Track pitching session which will be held on Dec 17.

The main partners and collaborators for the programme are TEGAS, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), FutureLab.my, FixColab, Farbeat Technologies, IEEE CMSB, IEEE R10 Young Professional, IEEE Young Professional Malaysia Section, IEEE Students (SPAx), IEEE R10, IEEE Industry Engagement, and IEEE Entrepreneurship.

The Sarawak Track Final Pitching will be live streamed on IEEE Innovation Nation Malaysia and TEGAS Digital Village & Digital Innovation Hub Facebook pages on Dec 10.
