KUCHING: The Bidayuh culture during Gawai 2023 has not only captured the attention of locals but also attracted interest from individuals outside the community.

According to Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, the black and red costumes were becoming more popular among both young and old attendees.

He said that those from beyond the Bidayuh and Dayak communities, as well as tourists, foreigners, and people from other origins, all embraced these colours.

As such, John encouraged the Bidayuh community to take pride in their heritage and cultural practises.

“Be proud to be a Bidayuh,” he told our reporter.

In a response to the New Sarawak Tribune’s article titled “Revival of Bidayuh Cultural Pride,” John highlighted the abundance of cultural events organised during this year’s Gawai celebration, showcasing the essence of Bidayuh traditions.

He pointed out that numerous events were organised, showcasing Bidayuh’s rich culture.

The Bidayuh leader also praised the varied terminologies used during the festival, noting that they reflect the uniqueness and complexity of Bidayuh practises.

“The Gawai festival has been celebrated in Bidayuh and Dayak villages, settlements, and within kampung zones,” he added.

The Bukit Semuja’s support for the piece also emphasised the contribution of Gawai festivals to resurrecting Bidayuh traditional pride.

Through events like Gawai, the Bidayuh people have successfully showcased their customs, rituals, and unique traditions to a wider audience.

As Bidayuh cultural pride continues to flourish, it is hoped that more individuals, regardless of their background, will embrace and appreciate the significance of this vibrant community and its heritage.
