KUCHING: Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei has urged the state government to issue land titles for the KMC flats at Jalan Ban Hock to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to secure the interests of the residents living there.

“The land lease for the two parcels of land for this area has expired in 2017,” he said.

“At present, there is no document to prove the proprietorship of MBKS over the land.

“This is an insecurity for the residents of KMC flats because we do not know when the state government will alienate (the land) to any private developer because under the Sarawak Land Code, the state government has the power to do so.”

He said this when met by reporters after a Mooncake Festival do with KMC Flats residents, Sunday night.

Wong also urged MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng to look into the matter regarding land title renewal and MBKS as the proprietor of the KMC flats.

“If nothing is being done, I will issue the title to the local council to secure the property for welfare purposes when we come into power (next state election).

“This is a historical place whereby during the British governance, it was established to help the urban poor and thus, it should not be turned into commercial purposes or personal profit,” he continued.

At the same time, Wong also revealed that a list of development would be brought in for the residents, including the repair of existing facilities and upgrade of the basketball courts.

Meanwhile, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii also announced that his party would collaborate with various agencies to hold more welfare and community-based programmes in Kuching in the near future.
