KUCHING: China is calling on the Sarawak government to establish a representative office to enhance bilateral ties.

Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Wiping, said the establishment of a representative office in China by the state government is crucial to bolstering economic and trade collaborations between the two regions.

Xing pointed out the significant opportunities for Chinese enterprises presented by Sarawak’s position as the third-largest state in Malaysia’s economy.

With Sarawak’s pursuit of the 2030 high-income state development goal, he expressed optimism that there is potential for collaboration in infrastructure, high-end manufacturing, clean energy, digital economy, and other sectors.

“At present, China-Sarawak cooperation spans infrastructure construction and extends to high-end manufacturing, clean energy, and the digital economy.

“We are looking forward to taking the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), ports, railroads, smart city, digital economy, and new energy development to engage more Chinese enterprises in Sarawak’s growth trajectory.

“This commitment aims to elevate economic and trade cooperation, aiding Sarawak in achieving its 2030 development objectives. Additionally, we are committed to expanding China-Sarawak trade,” he said.

He said this during the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (ACCCIS) Chinese New Year celebration and the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations gala dinner at the Imperial Hotel on Thursday night.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian attended the event on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

On the same note, Xing asserted that there is a need for expanded bilateral exchanges, noting the existing Friendship City ties between Sarawak and three Chinese provinces, along with over 30 cities.

As such, he urged leveraging these platforms to deepen mutual understanding and political trust, thereby facilitating broader cooperation across various sectors.

Additionally, Xing addressed the importance of cooperation in the field of education.

Recognising Sarawak’s talented youth, particularly in language proficiency, he expressed China’s willingness to collaborate in bringing renowned Chinese universities to Sarawak and facilitating partnerships between universities in both regions.

“These can provide opportunities for advanced studies for Sarawak’s students in China, contributing to talent cultivation and regional development,” he said.

Towards this end, Xing warmly welcomes the Premier and other Sarawak state politicians to visit China more frequently.

This comes in light of the Yunnan Province’s proposal for joint celebrations for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia.

“I firmly support their proposal. The specific activities are under negotiation,” he added.
