KUCHING: A 120-year-old 1.5-metre long ornamental wooden paddle, crafted in the early 20th century, is the latest addition to the collection in the Brooke Gallery at Fort Margherita here.

Brooke Museums manager Salliza Sideni said that this artifact was originally given to Rajah Muda of Sarawak Anthony Brooke in 1920 when he was travelling upriver.

“It was actually given to him by one of the leaders, but we are not sure if the leader was a Malay, Iban or Kayan” added Salliza.

On the acquisition of the artifact, she said it was given to the museum by the Brooke Museum director Jason Brooke during one of his trips back to the city.

Nothing specific was found so far about the history of the artifact but research is under way to find more answers about the wooden paddle.

“We thought it was actually made of belian wood (Eusideroxylon zwageri),” she said.

Belian wood is famous for its excellent resistance, high density and easy workability, making it one of preferred materials for maritime structures.

The artifact was revealed at the reopening of the Brooke Gallery today (July 13) that also marked 140 years of Fort Margherita, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.

The public can now visit the gallery but must comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the Health Ministry of Malaysia.
