Championship attracts 260 archers

SIBU: Some 260 people will take part in the 19th Sarawak Outdoor Archery Championship to be held at SMK Sacred Heart here from 16 to 20 March.

Organising chairman Tiong Kiong King said the championship is organised by Sarawak State Archery Association (Pemasa), Sarawak Archery Association (SAA) and Sibu Division Archery Association. 

“Twenty teams will vie for the championship’s trophy.  The teams are from Melaka, Sabah, Pulau Pinang, Perak, MSN Sarawak, Sibu DAA, Pemasa Kuching and X Tune from Miri.

“Besides the local teams, a team from Arab Saudi will also take part in the championship,” Tiong told reporters at a press conference here, yesterday. 

Tiong who is also president of SDAA said that the five-day championship is divided into men and women recurve, compound and novice categories. 

He also said that the opening ceremony will be officiated by Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Snowdan Lawan while the closing ceremony will be officiated by me on March 20,” he said.

Tiong added that the championship will not only enable the participants to gain experience but also unearth talent among the younger generation. 

Among those present were SDAA secretary Eric Tiong, treasurer Ting Chang Seng and manager of Sibu MSN Hii King Hung.
