KUCHING: Thirty-five-year-old William Bong gets a kick out of delivering food to your doorstep.

So the demands of the job, which can be energy-sapping, have had little effect on him for the simple reason that it is a job cut out for him.

“I like being a Grabfood rider because it gives me freedom and flexibility,” he says empathically.

“I have complete control over my schedule, thus allowing me to manage work and personal life. This helps me keep my obligations and also maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

He said what this basically means is that he can  choose when he works based on his needs and preferences.

The full time food delivery rider is challenging the norm by pursuing a career that gives him both the freedom and space to chart his own path in life without conforming with convention.

“My triumphant journey in this role can be attributed to the unwavering support and camaraderie bestowed upon me by the incredible team at Grab,” he said.

“I gained valuable experience in dedicated customer service through trials and along the  way learned how to handle difficult situations professionally while offering excellent service.

“It increased my capacity to think rapidly and come up with creative answers to problems.

“One constant problem for me is the pressure to accomplish projects on time. In this job, time management is an essential skill,” he added.

On an extremely hectic day, he delivers up to 50 orders.

By and large William enjoys working as a food delivery rider because it allows him to gain experience, meet new people, make friends and provide prompt service to customers.

An added advantage is that he  can activate and disable the Grabfood rider application as needed, especially during emergencies or when seeing to household duties .

My ambition to work full-time in the Grabfood sector has to do with my long-standing association with independent work, which began with the onset of the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020.

William has a supportive network of fellow riders he can rely on for help or guidance with his professional responsibilities.

“During my free time, when I am not working, I will go for outdoor activities such as fishing or for vacation etc.

“I feel more at ease now that I can create my own work schedule. If I need to take a vacation or respond to an urgent matter, I am allowed to to do so without the need for formal application or approval from my superiors,” he said.
