GEDONG: The Chitose Group from Japan has identified Gedong as a prime location for its new algae cultivation project.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the selection was attributed to Gedong’s favourable landscape and soil conditions.

“We have embarked on a journey to explore the extraction, cultivation, and development of algae. With the Chitose Group’s existing facility at Sejingkat for micro-algae biomass production, Gedong’s selection as the new cultivation site is a testament to its ideal conditions,” he said in a press conference after chairing the Agrihub @Gedong Project Meeting here today (Feb 3).

He further explained the complex applications of algae, ranging from food and pharmaceuticals to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

“This project, spanning 100 hectares, will not only serve as a field for Chitose’s global business research but also as a vital component in our broader strategy to harness algae’s potential across various industries.

“The decision to choose Gedong was based on extensive studies confirming its land suitability for algae cultivation, aimed at food and pharmaceutical production. We are also exploring algae’s use in SAF production through facilities in Bintulu, employing advanced technologies,” he added.
