SIBU: A civil servant has fallen victim to a parcel scam syndicate, causing her to lose RM29,800 of her savings.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said in a statement today that the victim, who is in her 20s, promptly reported the incident to the police on the same day it occurred.

Zulkipli said that the scam started last Thursday (July 20) with a phone call from an individual claiming to represent the J&T courier company.

“She was told that there is a parcel under her name with an identity card and four bank cards in it, and the delivery date for the parcel is already over.

“Subsequently, the victim was transferred to another person who posed as a police officer.

“The ‘police officer’ then asked the victim to reveal her banking details for investigation purposes. As she was scared, she did as instructed,” he said.

The distressing revelation came when the victim received a short messaging service (SMS) notifying her that a sum of RM29,800 from her account had been transferred to an unfamiliar account number.

“The victim felt that she had been cheated and filed a police report,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, which provides a jail term of up to 10 years and whipping, and is also liable to a fine.
