MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) and ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd will collaborate to safeguard the city’s environment from the hazards posed by used tyres through recycling.

In a statement on Monday (May 30), MCC disclosed that this effort was also in line with the Sarawak government’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS), in which environmental sustainability had been identified as one of the three main points to achieving a developed state by 2030.

ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd has been appointed and licensed by the state government to undertake the used tyre waste management programme throughout Sarawak since 2013.

ZHA has been collecting used tyres in the city, and to date, approximately two million pieces of used tyre (passenger car tyre equivalent) have been collected.

The used tyres are being recycled locally by ZHA to produce recycled rubber products such as recycled rubber granules, pre-coated SBR and rubber tiles, which are widely used in playground flooring and artificial football turf.

MCC is also the pioneer in setting up Local Agenda 21 Unit (now known as Sustainable Development Goal Unit) in the state to bring about sustainable development towards a better living environment and transforming Miri into a green city.
