Commercial crime records increase in cases

KUCHING: Commercial crime cases showed an increase of 187 cases or 14.63 per cent in the first six months this year compared to the same period in 2022.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said from January to June this year, 1465 cases were recorded compared to 1278 cases in the same period last year.

“The increase in the number of cases for the first six months this year recorded a total loss of RM60mil, while during the same period in 2022, it was a loss of RM36mil, which is an increase of RM24mil or 66.67 per cent.

“The cases that involved the most victims in the state is e-commerce which recorded 279 cases with RM2.06mil in losses, job offer recorded 165 cases with RM3.9mil in losses, non-existent loans recorded 154 cases with RM1mil in losses, investments recorded 115 cases with RM12.4mil in losses and phone scams recorded 111 cases with RM8mil in losses,” he told the media here on today (July 12).

He added that 456 arrests related to commercial crimes had been made from January to June this year.

“During the first six months this year, 652 people were charged in court, including cases from 2022.”

Among those present at the press conference were Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata and Sarawak Police Contingent Criminal Investigation Department head SAC Wong Ing Fung.
