MUKAH: People must choose leaders wisely to lead an area.

Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar said that the people should not elect a leader who is good at talking only in coffee shops as that is pointless.

“The most appropriate place for them to bring concepts, ideas and views is at the State Assembly.

“This is because DUN is the highest institution in Sarawak apart from State Astana,” he said.

He said this when speaking at the handing over of donations for mosques and surau in the Tellian constituency at the Setia Raja Mosque, here, yesterday.

Commenting further, he said, there are two values such as wisdom as well as honesty and sincerity that must be present in a leader.

In addition, he praised the leadership of Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine who is vocal in highlighting the problems faced by the people in his area.

In that regard, he also mentioned that the wealth this state has was for the prosperity of its people.

“This state has been bestowed with precious mineral oil resources, namely oil and gas. If previously we only got five per cent royalty, even in a period of 100 years, we will not be able to develop this state.

“Therefore, the state government changed its stance to increase oil royalties even though the central government did not initially agree.

“Now, the people of this state also benefit from the increase in royalties,” he explained.

He added, this could be seen through the development that has been, or is being planned in this state.

“Those developments, of course, require a lot of expenditure and due to the wisdom of our leaders, they are able to change the economy of this state.

“In addition, the political stability in this state is also important to guarantee the overall well-being of its people from all aspects,” he said.

During the event, he donated to five mosques amounting to RM10,000 each and seven mosques with a total of RM5,000 per recipient in the Tellian constituency with the total amount of RM85,000.

Meanwhile, Royston said, the people needed to appreciate every effort made by the government because it was always committed to helping the people in any situation.

“This includes the assistance provided by the government during and after COVID-19 to help facilitate daily affairs.

“We need to be thankful and appreciate every effort from any leader, including the grassroots level,” he added.

Also present were Mukah Resident Kueh Lei Poh and chairman of the Setia Raja Mukah Mosque Management Committee Jaafar Zaini.
