KUCHING: Continuous promotion through online platforms and door-to-door visits must be done to ensure that people go out and cast their votes on polling day.

Petra Jaya incumbent Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the following efforts were taken to ensure that voter turnout would be high on Nov 19.

“We do promotions on social media, door-to-door visits in an area and so on to encourage people to vote.

“This is our effort to ensure that the public are aware and come out to fulfil their responsibilities in the 15th general election (GE15).”

He said this after officiating at the Petra Jaya Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) Tour together with national astronaut Major Dr Faiz on Thursday (Nov 10).

Commenting further on the matter, Fadillah said the challenge in encouraging voters to come out and cast their votes depended on their whereabouts.

“Many of our voters want to come back and vote, but the travel cost is still high and unfortunately our ability to assist in this is limited.

“Despite this, we are always looking for ways to help them come home. Perhaps we will look for sponsors who can subsidise the cost for them.”

For the record, the number of voters in the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency for GE15 is 109,809 people, including youths aged 18.

In comparison to GE14, the number of voters for the parliamentary constituency was 57,925 registered voters, of which 43,513 or 75.12 per cent went out to vote.
