MIRI: The role and cooperation of parents and the community is crucial in ensuring the development of children with special needs.

In stating this, Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin stressed that parents need to always cooperate with the Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre (PPDK) in addition to bearing a responsibility in determining the direction and future of special needs children.

“These special needs children either face difficulty in learning problems, or have physical, mental or hearing problems.

“When a special needs child is born in a family, the parents are aware of the various challenges that will be faced,” he was quoted as saying by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) in a news report.

Lee was attending the PPDK Sunflower Miri 2023 appreciation dinner here on Saturday (Feb 11).

He added that parents do face challenges when they have children with special needs.

“Not only do they have to deal with financial and time issues, but they also have to deal with their own emotions and reactions from family members, relatives, friends and the community,” he said.
