MIRI: The police here on Tuesday arrested a man for allegedly cheating a woman over a land purchase in 2013.

Miri District Police chief, ACP Khoo Leng Huat said the 36-year-old man was detained by a police team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at a local hotel at around 8.30pm.

He said police also seized a mobile phone and a laptop.

“Based on the complaint, the victim had handed over RM500,000 to the suspect to purchase a piece of land in Kuching.

“Upon checking the land title at the Land Survey and Department office, she discovered that it did not belong to the suspect,” he said in a statement here.

Khoo said the victim had contacted the suspect and the latter promised her that he would return the money to her.

“But until now, the suspect failed to return the money to the victim which caused her to feel that she had been cheated,” he said.

Khoo said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
