KUCHING: Sarawak police will be conducting an eight-day statewide ‘Ops Khas’ in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Dayak festive season at the end of May.

The operation, which will involve a total of 850 personnel from various departments and branches in the state, will be held from May 29 to June 5.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, said the operation is aimed at reducing accident rates, enforcing traffic laws and creating a sense of comfort and safety among road users.

Police officers and personnel will be assigned at 56 identified accident-prone locations throughout Sarawak.

“We will also focus on preventing criminal trespassing by making periodic patrols to ensure that the premises and houses, which are left behind during the holidays, are safe from any crime.

“Aside from that, we will be working with the Sarawak Rivers Board and Sarawak Marine Department to ensure that the public, who are going back to their villages via riverine transport, are safe from any untoward incidents.

“Personnel from the Marine Police Force will be assigned at districts that uses riverine transports such as Sibu, Kapit, Song, Kanowit and Tatau to ensure that no accidents occur involving express boats,” he said in a press conference at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess of Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) yesterday (May 16).

Azman advised all road users to obey the traffic rules and instructions from on-duty enforcement officers on the roads throughout the festive season.

Strict actions can be taken against any road user found to be violating and not complying with the traffic rules.

He also reminded the public to provide cooperation and inform the police when leaving their homes during the festive season.

“They can do so by informing the police through the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app or calling the police stations or filling in the ‘Borang balik kampung’ found on the Royal Malaysia Police’s website,” he said.
