MIRI: The stage is set for the 2024 Sarawak Invitational Fencing Championship, scheduled from May 23 to 26 at Permy Mall here.

Sarawak Fencing Association President Affendi Ahmad said the championship will be a stage for the selection of the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXI Sarawak 2024.

“Eighteen top-tier athletes will compete to secure a spot on the Sarawak SUKMA team.

“The final list of names will be known after the championship later this month,” he said.

With eyes set on SUKMA glory, he said Sarawak is aiming high, targeting two golds and one bronze medal in fencing.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting also noted the championship’s role as a prelude to SUKMA.

“We are looking for standout athletes who will shine as our SUKMA candidates.

“As anticipation builds and swords clash, the Sarawak Invitational Fencing Championship 2024 promises to be an event filled with excitement, talent and fierce determination as athletes vie for a chance to represent their state on the national stage,” he said during a press conference here yesterday (May 4).

He disclosed that several countries and states within Malaysia confirmed their participation in the event.

“Joining the host nation Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei have all officially confirmed their presence, from within Malaysia, a strong contingent of states is set to compete, showcasing the nation’s depth of talent in fencing,” Ting said.

Representing West Malaysia, teams from Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Selangor will be vying for top honours. Hailing from the eastern region, Sabah and Sarawak will display their fencing prowess, aiming to defend their home turf.

The event features Men and Women Individual (Open) competitions, spanning across three weapon categories, namely Foil, Epee and Sabre.

In addition to the individual competitions, the championship also includes team events for both men and women.

The closing date for submitting the entry form is May 17.
