MIRI: Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang asked for the police’s assistance to monitor those who fly kites using strings coated with sharp glass powder in areas such as Tudan, Permyjaya and Luak.
“I have written to the police department seeking for their assistance to monitor such activity at these areas,” he said on Monday (Aug 30).
Aware that the kite-flying is a popular activity among the local community, especially among the youth, Yii expressed regret that it has recently become a source of complaints.
“This is in light of some kite-flying enthusiasts who fail to choose a proper place in carrying out the activity; disregarding the potential hazard that it may cause to the nearby passers-by, motorists and others approaching traffic.
“There are increasing reports of personal injuries and minor traffic accidents,” he said.
He added that there are also instances of accusations and arguments in social media and that Miri City Council also received public complaints urging authorities to take stern action.
“It was suggested that should there be an imminent threat to public safety, the police should take necessary action,” he said.
Yii has also called on the netizens to restrain from making any mindless comments on social media as this would cause harm among the community.
