MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) has removed all coloured used tyres which were formerly utilised as planter boxes along the Miri-Bintulu Road from the Sea Horse Roundabout to Miri Airport traffic light junction.

These tyres will now be used as planter boxes for plants and shrubs at the council’s Plant Nursery instead to reduce the costs of buying new flower pots.

This was disclosed by MCC in a statement today.

The council explained that the original intention of using used tyres as planter boxes was to prevent the huge stockpiles of used tyres from becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

However, the use of such tyres as decorative planter boxes has drawn various public reactions and prompted the council to deliberate on the matter in one of its committee meetings on Feb 11 this year.

After assessing the pros and cons of such initiative, MCC decided to remove the used tyres along the Miri-Bintulu Road and use them elsewhere.
